Critical approaches 1.6.2
Critical approaches
The sun's
Readers consist of 26% being 65+ and the others consist around 10.2% 15 - 24, 13.8% 25 - 34,
35 - 44 that are 15.0%,
45-54, which are 18.0% and finally 55-64 17.1%.
The main target
audience for news companies is Demographic
The print sell is
1.7m p/d and the main Social class is (A, B, C1, C2) which cover 2.7m 1/2
copies.
The times have 34% of their readers which are 65+ and they also
have the same social class as the sun which is (A, B, C1, C2) which covers 1
mil of their copies.
The times has roughly
440,000 copies taken every day but the number can nearly be doubled as people
tend to let others see the news papers or use them for classes or research
in libbers which means their are more readers than the copies that have
been taken, their can't be a rough number for this as it can variety.
Both The sun and the
times fall in the A, B, C1, and C2 categories because it’s a broad audience but
they come to very different differences, for instance the Times use more text
and less images in the papers they publish and the Sun uses more imagery than
text which fits their own target audience.
Similarities between the
both cover Captions, crosshead, masthead, headline, splash and photography.
The differences between
them is the Sun tends to have a strapline and a pug unlike the times, this
helps make it look more engaging for the readers of the sun as there is less
text and more images promoting things which are simplistic to look at and
aesthetically pleasing for viewing. As the times just includes more detailed
text about incidents that have happened and less imagery as the reader has more
time to read about what has happened, compared to the sun where the imagery
would take up a lot of the page and the reader could see about the story more
from the photography taken.
The Times is formal and broad sheet as it uses basic colours and can be bland on some of their normal newspapers, it lacks image's and is mainly covered in text as thats is what they aim for the audience (mainly older readers) of people who have time to space and read a lot rather than just look at a load of images an da lack of text to explain what has happened (The Sun).
The sun is informal and a tabloid, it uses bold colours and images to draw in their audience in which help make it very popular as it does not require a lot of time to sit down and read and uses lest text as it deters a particular audience from it (The Times).
·
The Times aim is to look more professional and The Sun aims to look more applying for the readers of the magazine, as you can see above the times have clear text and a suitable font for the target audience that they are aiming for compared to the sun where its aimed more for the younger generation for their target audience.
They like to talk about their reporters and give them credit for what they have done work wise, for instance they tend to get noticed more as they are a good journalists, like the independent for example they will try to give credit and show the journalists names compared to the times or the sun.
They mention the reporters
name in the beginning of the article to give them credit and so if anyone likes
a particular reporter they will be able to look for them easier and it makes it
easier to
Note who/ credit that made
the article. (This is also known as labeling the by-line).
Codes and
Conventions:
Codes are techniques that
help to create meaning in the things they are used in. Codes are divided into
two categories technical and symbolic.
Technical codes are the ways
in which equipment is used to tell the story in media, for example the camera
shots in the papers for the sun are more used as its more eye-catching and engaging
for their audience compared to symbolic where it is less imagery telling the
story.
Symbolic codes show what we
couldn’t see in something, For example, you could have a quote from someone on
how they feel about an article or option in a paper, which is a more in-depth
opinion.
Some codes fit both
categories, music is an example of this (music video) both the video for the
music video can be telling a story to the viewers and the lyrics can be telling
another depending on what they want to get across.
Conventions are the
generally accepted ways of doing something. An example of this would be using
interviewee quotes in an article or section of the paper, this could be for a
response for a brand or product that someone it trying to promote in the
newspaper etc. and is an effective way of publicizing things.
Codes and conventions are
used to help the papers keep its audience by using different methods for
instance the sun uses more imagery/ photography as its main audience is for
people that have less time to sit down and read through it they tend to look at
the photography, short straplines, Pugs and Headings.
Compared to the times where there are less images and more text. On the pages, this is because their audience has more time to read them and is more like commuters that get the train in the morning. This is why they are slightly formatted different and even though they may still seem similar they are far apart from the audience.

I used Bold black headings to stand out on the Newspaper I have created which helps make it stand out from the red background and appeal to the target audience that I am aiming for, the uses of imagery that I have used help to also gain the younger audience and also helps to appeal to the older audience as it has celebrity endorsement in it so people will be attracted to the newspaper, I used more basic colours on top of the red as it's more eye catching that way and makes the images stand out better.
I used A big bold headline in red to make it stand out from the image I used in the background, The plain black background with the actor in the middle was used for promotional purposes and to attract the audience that I am aiming for, this helps make it more engaging for the audience that I am aiming for as it's less dialog and more imagery. The small amount of text that I have in the left corner of the image is just to give the reader a quick view of what this magazine is going to cover/ talk about it is simplistic and clean which makes it very suitable for the same target audience as the Times.
If you want to aim for a more younger audience then I would suggest going for the same type of style that the sun use, which is more imagery and less text as a lot of text in general is not appealing to the younger audience as it is so the more images which cover celebrities or upcoming situation that are bound to get a lot of attention, this will help to gain the audience that the sun mainly have.
If though you wanted the older target audience and people that have more time on their hand then you would want to have more text and less images (note that you will still want images just not as much as you want to go into more detail about what has happened), you need to use bold and attractive headlines as well as subheadings to help draw your audience in as they are more interested in what you are talking about and less about the imagery.
